BUNA Treks & Expeditions welcomes travelers to join in our classic journey trekking to old Kingdom of Upper Mustang, where one can witness fabulous vista of exotic landscapes, old traditional villages and ancient Walled Village of Lo Manthang, walk leads with super views on daily around high eroded red color hill cliffs with high smaller caves where old treasure of ancient scrolls, idols, manuscripts where preserved.

This exotic journey offers tremendous views of snow capped mountain range of Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri’s, Bhirkuti and Damdodar Himal which is less seen in other areas of Himalaya or by trekkers.

On this Upper Mustang trek vista of Mt. Dhaulagiri I (8,167m) Tukuche Peak (6,920 m) Nilgiri’s Peaks (7,061m) Annapurna I (8,091m / 26,545ft) Annapurna South (7,219m-23,693ft), Gangapurna (7,455m-24,457ft) and Annapurna III (7,555m-24,787ft) to Mt. Machhapuchhre (Fish-tail) Base Camp with 08thhighest Mt. Manaslu 8,163 m, range of mountains with Lamjung Himal.

Upper Mustang trek one of the classic trekking regions, located in the remote area of Far North West Nepal on the old Trans Himalayan Trade and caravan route to Tibet. Actually an extension of Tibetan vast plateau as culture, religion, traditions, custom and way of life is similar to Tibetans, where this kingdom stands after separating from Tibet in early 7th Century.

Upper Mustang is known as Lo where culture remains as it was for hundreds of years, on this trek where all types of travelers can join taking a little more than a week in the comfort and hospitality of Lo people in warm cozy lodge known as tea houses along the route.

Upper Mustang is rated as one of the best cultural and classic trekking destination, for its unique ancient traditions and way of life as it was from many centuries, this journeys leads from mediterranean of mid hills to arctic landscapes and climate zone, all these drastic change in temperature found only in Mustang and Kaligandaki area, this makes a drastic change in vegetations and its awesome scenery and beautiful landscapes.

This journey starts from Jomsom of lower Mustang area and then walking over to higher Mustang region via Lho La pass to Dhakmar 3,810 m, highest point of this trip, after a great walk and exploring fascinating area of Upper Mustang slowly heading back to Jomsom for the scenic flight to Pokhara city where the high snow capped peaks reflects in its serene lake Phewa.

Day 01:       Morning drive to Pokhara and transfer to hotel.

Day 02:       Morning flight to Jomsom 2,715 m and trek to Kagbeni – 04 hrs.

Day 03:       Trek to Tshele 3,050 m – 06 hrs.

Day 04:       Trek to Geling 3,540 m – 05 hrs.

Day 05:       Trek to Tsarang 3,560 m – 06 hrs.

Day 06:       Trek to Lho-Manthang 3,700 m – 05 hrs.

Day 07:       In Lo-Manthang rest day for acclimatization and local visit.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 01: Drive to Pokhara 950m - 06 hrs journey distance 220 k.m.

Morning travel by tourist coach or in private vehicle over the busy scenic highway towards amazing picturesque Pokhara valley driving through the Himalayan foothills, on arrival at Pokhara transfer to respective hotels nearby beautiful Phewa Lake with afternoon free for short walks.
For flying option a 30 minutes of scenic flight to Pokhara on arrival our staff will transfer you to respective hotels by the Phewa Lake side with afternoon at leisure.

Day 02: Morning Flight to Jomsom 2,700 and trek to Kagbeni - 04 hrs.

An early start from the hotel in Pokhara for a short flight to Jomsom, the flight takes only 22 mins with mind blowing views of Annapurna, Manaslu and Dhaulagiri range of mountains, on reaching Jomsom meet our trekking crews and porters, Jomsom a large town and a headquarter of Mustang district.

First day walk of this fabulous journey starts right from Jomsom walking on a gentle path most of the day on the Kali-Gandaki river valley, after four hours of good walk on this windy valley reaching at Kagbeni village from here starts the Tibetan culture and religion with great scenery of Mt. Dhaulgairi, Nilgiri’s, this village, the door to Forbidden Kingdom of Upper Mustang.

Day 03: Trek to Tsele 3,050m - 06 hrs.

From Kagbeni morning walk continues with an uphill into a canyon gorge of Kaligandaki river, following this river upstream with awesome landscapes scenery with red cliffs on both side of the gorge, passing few villages and hamlets coming to a nice cultivated farm land at Tirigaon village, looking over an interesting and picturesque cliff canyon of red colored erosion, continue trek on this windswept valley for another few hours reaching at Tsele (or Chele) village for overnight stop, this quite a large village located by the Kaligandaki river valley.

Day 04: Trek to Geling 3,540 m - 05 hrs.

After a nice stop at Tsele village, our journey continues with a climb to Gyakar village, on the wide barren and arid terrain to reach at Samar village, one of the lovely villages along this route. After a ice stop continue walk towards a small settlement of Bhena, and then leading to a steep uphill to Yamda La top at 3,860 meters a small pass, offering glorious views of Mustang wide valley including high peaks with Mt. Dhaulagiri mountain range. After an enjoyable stop with the striking views, descend all the way to Geling village for overnight stop through Syangboche village.

Day 05: Trek to Tsarang 3,560 m - 06 hrs.

Morning an optional tour of old Geling monastery before beginning the walk to Tsarang “Charang” village, an interesting old monastery of Geling here visiting the monastery with Buddhist mani (prayer) wheels run with water power, after a quick tour, morning walk leads to cross over Ghaymi Khola (stream) and then following a long row of interesting Mani walls (holy prayer stone) and reaching at Dhakmar village, after a short rest here couple of hours of god walk brings at overnight stop at Tsarang village encircled by large crops fields with buck wheat’s and barley the only crops that can be grown on this high elevation and cold climate, at Tsarang after getting organized in local lodge or guesthouse for overnight stop, with time to visit another monastery of Tsarang village.

Day 06: Trek to Lho-Manthang 3,700 m - 04 hrs.

Walk today leads to our main highlight and to our destination reaching the higher side of Upper Mustang at Lho Manthang. A half day walk to Lho Manthang for lunch and overnights, the pleasant morning walk follows a gentle path and then crossing a steel bridge to reach at Marang village, from here the trail winds up to a ridge top, coming across chortens and mani stones in between Tsarang and Lho Manthang, offering amazing views of windswept terrain landscapes and of true Tibetan plateau country with super panorama of Nilgiri’s, Tilicho and Bhrikuti mountains, after a wonderful moment walk leads to a climb at Lo La pass 3,950 meters elevation and looking below  views of Lo Manthang walled city with its fortress, and then on the downhill path reaching a stream and an hour walk reaches inside a mystical, medieval walled city of Lho Manthang here check into a lodge  for overnight stop for two nights.

Day 07: In Lho-Manthang for local hike and tour.

An exciting place for rest and free day and this is the highest overnight stop of this wonderful journey as well, after a lazy morning with breakfast explore the important places if the king of Mustang is around worth a visit to the palace like fort, nearly all the houses are of Tibetan style with its strong influence and way of life also, visit the surrounding villages intact with this large village rather than a city. This amazing place with four major monasteries the Namgyal Gompa, Champa Lakhang (God House), Red Thubchen Gompa, Chyodi Gompa and the great Entrance Hall.

Day 08: Trek to Dhakmar 3,810 m - 06 hrs.

From Lho-Manthang heading back to Jomsom onwards, after 2 nights of great interesting and impressive time, heading back using an old trekking route passing several farm houses and  tended fields with few willow and poplars the only trees that survives in this barren terrain, a few hours trekking to Marang village on the same path and then avoiding the main trail to an old walking path all the way to our overnight stop at Dhakmar village after six hours of nice fine walks.

Day 09: Trek to Ghiling 3,806 m - 06 hrs.

After Dhakmar village, starting the morning trekking retracing the same path back to  Ghiling village for overnight stop, crossing a bridge over Ghami Khola to Ghami village with visit Geling monastery on route.

Day 10: Trek to Tsusang 2,980 m - 06 hrs.

As the walk progress loosing elevation as the journey heads towards Kaligandaki valley, morning walk beginning with gradual uphill to Syangboche village, from here couple of hours walk brings at Yamda La after catching the wonderful views of surrounding hills and valleys, then downhill to Bhena and Samar villages, and then following a stream leading through Gyakar and Chele villages and completing the day walk at Tsusang village.

Day 11: Trek to Muktinath 3,870 m – 07 hrs.

Today one of the longest trek of this trip, but interesting as the route leads to an awesome Muktinath Temple area, where hundreds of pilgrims visits this temple in auspicious time from all over Nepal and India.


Walk follows the upper trail leaving the villages behind passing several Yak herders huts and shelters around summer grazing area, with fantastic vista of Dhaulagiri, Tukuche, Nilgiri’s peaks as the walk eventually end reaching at Muktinath, here in the comfort of nice lodge, as this place leads to famous and popular Thorang la pass, on route Annapurna circuit and Manang area.


Here, visit the holy Muktinath premises with 108 water spouts and other places of interest.

Day 12: Trek to Jomsom 2,715 m - 06 hrs.

After a wonderful time at Muktinath with long walk of previous day, today an easy short trek to Jomsom as the walk leads downhill passing the old Jharkot village and towards Kaligandaki River valley near Eklabhatti small place with few lodges, after a stop here walking for another few hours on the valley floor reaching at Jomsom and the end of the long walk of this amazing trips, in Jomsom in comfort of nice and good lodges and enjoy the party with fellow members and staffs with apple products of Mustang area, as Jomsom, Kagbeni to Marpha famous for apples and its products.

Day 13: Fly back to Pokhara.

Morning transfer to Jomsom airport for a scenic short flight back to Pokhara on reaching Pokhara airport, transfer to respective hotels by the Phewa lake side, after a wonderful memorable trip in Upper Mustang, afternoon free at leisure.

Day 14: Drive back to Kathmandu.

Morning drive back Kathmandu on reaching Kathmandu our staff will receive and transfer you back to respective hotels and then our service concludes after providing our outmost hospitality and good management.
(Options to fly back to Kathmandu our staff will transfer you to Pokhara domestic airport for 30 minutes scenic flight to Kathmandu, on reaching Kathmandu meet our staff and then transfer back to respective hotels).
